It is sometimes (possible erroneously) supposed that five digit MKVIs are the best. Serial numbers can be used to identify supposedly “better” instruments. So saxophones may not be numbered sequentially. Many companies make other instruments, not just saxophones and the serial numbers are spread over their entire range.A famous example would be the early 30s Conn instruments. This can lead to what we call transitional models, which have some new and some old features. The production of old and new models can overlap, or in some cases features of a new model appear on the later batch of the previous model.Sometimes a company may hold back a batch of instruments and then release them a couple of years later.Although the dates in these charts are reasonably accurate, there may be some discrepancies for various reasons. The main thing you learn from serial numbers is the age of the instrument of course. Selmer SBA Alto What Can Serial Numbers Tell Me? Nothing sings like this naked lady, I think it is a heavier horn then the regular 6Ms. ( really becomes a pain when switching from my buffet mentioned above ). You have to make some adjustments for the 26M, the G# table is located in the front of the horn and until you get used to it you end up hunting for it with your pinkie. I had to hunt this horn down after getting the Conn bug from play testing a Conn tranny. I played one back in Junior High and I remember it being very powerful. King Zephyrs are pretty awesome too, and probably one of the cheaper vintage horns. The G# table will ruin you for other horns, it so easy it will spoil you. Steve Goodwin referred to it as "a near perfect design" and "the articulated low C#/Bb mechanism should be on all horns". The Buffet S1 Alto has fantastic key work. I bought the vintage horns that I have because I was impressed by them.
